[MUSIC] So, the gastric balloon, as you can see here, is a soft yet durable balloon designed to fit comfortably in your stomach. Essentially, the idea behind the balloon Is that it sits there and occupies space so you feel full early during meals and also you feel less hungry in between meals. [MUSIC] So, the great thing about this procedure is that it’s done purely endoscopically. So, it’s very minimally invasive, without any scars whatsoever. So, you basically you go in for a procedure, have very mild sedation, and then you wake up after 20 minutes.

You can go home after 2 hours. [MUSIC] So, essentially this balloon is most suited for patients who’ve tried to lose weight through diet and exercise. Or even with medications, but have been unable to do so, or really unable to keep that weight off that they initially lost. It’s also very useful for patients who don’t really want to go through the process of having bariatric surgery. The ideal patient has a BMI between 30 and 40, although it also works for patients out of this BMI range. You can expect to lose about 30 to 50 pounds secondary to the balloon.

So, its very effective and the great thing is most of the weight loss is in the first four months after the balloon is inserted, so it’s very good for those who are interested in very rapid weight loss. [MUSIC] See, our treatment program’s unique because it runs for a year, this is despite the balloon only being inserted for six months. We believe this offers more durable weight loss. As part of our team we have a gastroenterologist, an internal medicine physician who specializes in obesity, as well as a nutritionist who will play a very active role in changing your lifestyle behaviors such that you’ll be able to maintain the weight once it’s been lost. You’ll see a gastroenterologist prior to having your balloon inserted, who’ll assess you for suitability.

Then you go ahead and have your procedure and it will be very closely followed up by the whole team throughout the rest of the 12 months. [MUSIC] So, with the gastric balloon, we expect that you lose anywhere between 30 and 50 pounds. One of the great things about the weight loss is it’s incredibly rapid. So, most of the weight loss actually happens within the first four months. So it’s very good for someone if they’re trying to lose weight for a particular target such as a wedding or a reunion. [MUSIC] The gastric balloon is inserted with the aid of endoscopy when the patient’s sedated.

The balloon, when it’s deflated, is passed through the mouth into the stomach and then once in the stomach we inject 600 to 700 cc’s of water until it’s full. Then, the deployment catheter is released and the balloon is left behind in the stomach. So, the removal procedure is very simple. It takes approximately 20 minutes.

The patient is asleep. The endoscope is inserted into the stomach and using a small catheter with a sharp tip, it is inserted into the balloon and then all of the fluid is aspirated. And very simply, once the balloon is completely deflated, it is easily grabbed and then removed with the endoscope through the mouth. [MUSIC] The insertion procedure is very safe. For the first three days, you might feel a little bit nauseous, but after that you have very little sense that the balloon is actually inside you. During the first two weeks we recommend a liquid diet just while you’re getting accustomed to the balloon.

But even during this time you’re able to exercise and perform activities such as swimming or playing tennis. [MUSIC] We believe in a multidisciplinary team approach. We have a very comprehensive program which involves an internal medicine specialist who has expertise in obesity. A nutritionist is very active, and engages patients and will be in contact with them on a near monthly basis.

We also believe in a very personalized approach to patient care. And, we believe in tailoring our approach to the individual patient such that we can help them achieve their individual goals. [MUSIC]
